Method- 1

  • 100 sq. m nursery area is sufficient for raising one acre area.
  • Prepare beds of 3 m long and 0.6 m width and 10-15 cm height.
  • Keep 60 cm distance in two beds.
  • Sow the seeds at a depth of 1-2 cm & 10 cm between rows on raised seed beds covered with a fine layer of soil followed by light watering by water can.
  • The beds should then be covered with dry straw or grass or sugarcane leaf to maintain required temperature and moisture.
  • The watering should be done by water can as per the need till germination is completed.
  • Ten days before transplanting reduce the quantity of water application to the nursery beds to harden the seedlings.
  • After 3 days of seed germination drench the seedbed with Ridomil @ 15-20 gms. in 10 L of water, to protect the seedlings from damping-off disease.
  • Spray 19:19:19 @ 5 gm + Thiamethoxam @ 0.25 gm per L water at 25 days after sowing.

Method- 2

  • Fill the pro trays with Cocopeat @ 1.2 kg per tray.
  • Sow the treated seeds in protrays @ 1 seed per cell.
  • Cover the seed with cocopeat and keep the trays one above the other and cover with a polythene sheet until germination starts (5 Days after sowing).
  • After 6 days, place the pro trays with germinated seeds individually in the shade net.
Nursery Duration
  • Duration- 45 days
  • Plants are ready for transplanting when 3-4 leaves have appeared and stem become thick.
